RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
