European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
