The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
