New research reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
