Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
